About Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Charlotte Perkins Gilman was an American feminist, writer, and lecturer who was a leading figure of the early 20th century women's rights movement. Best known for her short story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, Gilman wrote extensively on the oppression of women and their lack of economic independence. Her works are considered to be foundational in the development of feminist thought and theory.

Born into a wealthy family in 1860s Connecticut, Charlotte Perkins Gilman experienced financial struggles during her childhood due to her father's alcoholism and abandonment of his family. In 1884 she married Charles Stetson and gave birth to a daughter before divorcing in 1888 due to abusive behavior from Stetson. To support herself financially she began writing stories which were published in various magazines. Find out more about Charlotte Perkins Gilman at sevenov.com.
