About Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Charlotte Perkins Gilman is an important figure in American history and one of the most influential writers and activists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She is best known for her short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper," which brought attention to the mistreatment of women during this period. Her work has heavily impacted literature, psychology, sociology, symbolism, utopianism and feminism.
Gilman was born on July 3rd 1860 in Hartford Connecticut. She wrote extensively throughout her life on a variety of topics including economics, social reform, health education and equal rights for women. In addition to novels and short stories she penned essays such as 'The Home: Its Work and Influence' as well as influential books like 'Women & Economics' which argued that both genders should share equally in domestic labor responsibilities.
