About Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) was an American writer, lecturer, and social reformer. She was a pioneer of the American feminist movement and is best known for her short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" which is considered to be one of the earliest works of American feminist literature. Throughout her life she wrote novels, short stories, poems and non-fiction works in addition to being an advocate for women’s rights. Her most influential work was Women and Economics (1898) in which she discussed the importance of economic freedom for women.
At a time when women were seen as less than equal to men, Charlotte argued that it was essential that women be allowed access to education, employment opportunities and financial independence; this would give them the same rights as men in society.
