About Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Charlotte Perkins Gilman was an American author, feminist and social reformer who lived from 1860 to 1935. She is best remembered for her short story ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ which highlighted the double standards placed on women in society as well as her book, Women and Economics which called for greater economic freedom for women. At a time when women were largely excluded from public life, Gilman was a tireless advocate for reforms that would allow them to participate more fully in society.
Gilman wrote extensively about the importance of education and greater autonomy for women in order to allow them to reach their full potential. She argued that marriage should not be seen as a woman's only pathway to success and believed that all people had the right to pursue careers they were passionate about.
