About Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Charlotte Perkins Gilman was one of the most influential authors and activists of her time. She is best known for her short story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, which has become a classic in feminist literature. Born in 1860 in Hartford, CT, Charlotte was an advocate for women’s rights throughout her life. Her writing explored topics such as gender roles, marriage, motherhood and economic independence among many others.

Women's suffrage was an important issue to her and she wrote widely on the subject during the early 1900s. In addition to being a prolific writer, Charlotte also joined causes such as birth control reform and pacifism. She published books such as Women and Economics (1898) and The Man-Made World (1911) which addressed inequality between men and women in economic terms.
