Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens

Author: Charles Dickens | Published: 1865

Our Mutual Friend Synopsis

Our Mutual Friend is a novel by English author Charles Dickens, published in 1865. This is Dickens's last completed novel. It explores the complexities of human relationships and the transformative power of love, compassion, and forgiveness. Like most Dickens stories, Our Mutual Friend weaves multiple plotlines and a diverse cast of characters to explore themes of wealth, social class, identity, and love.

The story begins with the death of John Harmon, a young man set to inherit a fortune from his wealthy father. Harmon's inheritance is conditional upon his marriage to Bella Wilfer, a young woman he has never met. However, Harmon's body is found in the Thames River, and his fortune passes to Mr. and Mrs. Boffin, a humble couple who take on a newfound wealth. The Boffins become the central figures in the novel as they navigate the challenges and temptations that come with their sudden riches. Little did they know John Harmon was still alive under the name John Rokesmith.

About Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens is a world-renowned author and one of the most prolific writers in history. Born in England in 1812, his works are known for their vivid characters, social commentary, and richly detailed settings. He gained fame for novels such as A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations, which have become literary classics.

Dickens' work often focused on themes of inequality, poverty, and injustice; much of this was based on his experiences with harsh working conditions and financial hardship as a child. He wrote about the plight of the working class during England's Industrial Revolution to expose injustices to the public. His stories have been adapted into countless films and other media, making him one of literature's best-loved authors worldwide. Find out more about Charles Dickens at sevenov.com.
