The Chimes Synopsis
The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In, also simply known as The Chimes, is a novel by English author Charles Dickens and was first published in 1844. This book is Dickens's second Christmas book.
This story revolves around a man named Toby Veck or commonly known as Trotty. Trotty is from the lower rungs of society, and he develops a sense of worthlessness and apprehension that working-class people possess inherent wickedness. Trotty's daughter Meg is planning on marrying her lover Richard. Trotty has reservations about the marriage but decides to keep it to himself. The excitement from Meg's news is shortlived when Cute, the area's magistrate, bump into them with a group of affluent men. There is a fascination regarding Trotty and Meg, as they have a different life than this group of men. They were questioned in a degrading manner, making Meg wonder if she is making the right decision to marry.
