Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Author: Charles Dickens | Published: 1861

Great Expectations Synopsis

Great Expectation is a novel by English author Charles Dickens, published in 1861. This book is Dickens's thirteenth novel and was first published as a serial in Dickens's weekly periodical All the Year Round.

The story revolves around Pip and his three stages of expectations. Pip lives with his sister and her husband, Joe, a kind-hearted blacksmith. Pip is a young orphan who encounters a series of life-changing events. One night, he comes across an escaped convict, Magwitch, in a graveyard and is threatened by Magwitch into giving him food and a tool to get rid of his restraints. This incident initiates events that alter Pip's destiny. A few years later, Pip is invited to the eccentric Miss Havisham's Satis House to entertain her adopted daughter Estella. He becomes infatuated with Estella, who treats him with disdain. Miss Havisham, a bitter and vengeful woman, raised Estella to break men's hearts.
