"Strange Sanctuary" is a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was published in Liberty on December 1939.
This short story centers around a little girl by the name of Dolly. Dolly has no place to stay since his father is sick and left her to go to New Mexico. Dolly was told to stay at the Appletons for a while. Mrs. Appletons is her mother's best friend. When Dolly arrived, she was greeted by a little boy named Clarke Cresswell, and Dolly took an interest in him because of his sophisticated manner. After staying at the Appletons, Dolly's father writes about a current relative in town, Charlie Craig, Dolly's uncle. Dolly visits him, and she is very excited because his current residence is near Clarke's aunt's house, where he is currently staying.

The little girl with dark blue eyes and last summer’s golden tan rang the doorbell of the Appletons’ house a second time, then turned to the Negress behind her.
“I know there’s somebody in, Hazeldawn, because I can hear them. Just leave the suitcase and you can go back to Mrs. Martin’s.”
“You sure, now, these people expect you?”
