The Pat Hobby Stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald | Published: 1962

The Pat Hobby Stories

The Pat Hobby Stories are a series of 17 short stories written by iconic American author, F. Scott Fitzgerald. Written in 1939 and 1940, the stories follow the life of a hapless Hollywood screenwriter, Pat Hobby. Set during the Great Depression era, these tales offer readers an insight into the struggles faced by many creative professionals during this time who were striving to make something of their lives amidst difficult circumstances.

Pat Hobby was born out of Fitzgerald’s own experiences living in Hollywood at the time, where he found himself struggling as a screenwriter for MGM Studios after achieving literary fame with his previous works like The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night. Through his writing style – which is funny and often bitter – Fitzgerald reveals Hollywood’s disappointment in its writers and gives us a glimpse into their daily lives as they strive to make ends meet financially and creatively.
